Max Patch on the Appalachian Trail

Updated: Sep 12, 2022

Max Patch is situated along the Appalachian Trail on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. If you find yourself here by way of the AT, good on you! You probably have very defined calf muscles. To get here by car, be prepared to bump along on a gravel road up to the trail head. The trail loop around the mountain is short at only around 1.5 miles. So, even those who are not blessed with athletic physiques can manage this trail pretty easily. Y'all. The views. There's a reason this place is Instagram famous. At the summit, the views are 360 degrees around. It's beautiful from every angle. Shed a tear in appreciation if you must... the other hikers probably won't judge you too harshly.

Max Patch is a great spot to spend the day (or half day)  and watch the sun rise or set. There are plenty of level spots to set up a camp site and wake up to the greatest views ever. (NOTE: Practice Leave No Trace wherever you wander and pick up your trash after hiking or camping. Take only pictures and leave only footprints.)

This place is awesome, and that's all there is to it. You probably didn't need another reason to go visit Max Patch, but just in case, here ya go.  Happy wandering, y'all!
